Bioinformatics Core Grant
The Bioinformatics Unit is funded as Bioinformatics Core of the NIAMS-sponsored
Skin disease Research Center at University of Texas Southwestern Medical
Center at Dallas. The Bioinformatics Unit will receive $50,000 per year in
direct cost for five years starting June, 2001.
September 2000

NCSA Faculty Fellow
Dr. Lei Liu has been named one of the eleven NCSA Faculty Fellows for the
academic year 2000 - 2001. His research topic is "Information visualization in comparative and functional
genomics".
October 1999
Equipment Grant
An Equipment Grant was awarded to the Bioinformatics Unit by Sun Microsystems, Inc. Sun Microsystems, Inc. donated
one E250 Enterprise Server and five ultra10 workstations to the Bioinformatics Unit. The
Enterprise Server is used to host an Oracle database that stores all sequence data
generated by the High Throughput Sequencing Unit. The five workstations will be used to
set up a teaching lab.
Research Board Grant
A Campus
Research Board Grant was awarded to Dr. Lei Liu to develop prototype system of information
visualization and data drill down mechanisms for comparative and functional genomics. This
project is in collaboration with Prof. Geneva Belford, Department of Computer Science. The
grant provides support for one research assistantship from October 1999 to August 2000.
